One of the largest sources of the world’s turquoise comes from a mountain located northwest of Kingman. Because of this, this small city along famed Route 66 has been dubbed the Turquoise Capital of the World. This came about partly through the insightful efforts of Leonard Hardy, of L.W. Hardy Co., the developer of a semi-professional softball team, the Turquoise Kings. They played in some International Softball Congress World Championship games in the 1970’s, and won the “Best Uniform Trophy” in 1974 (on display at the Mohave Museum of History & Arts).
